Door-to-door love: CFC Netherlands reaches out to jobless OFWs

Tuesday, August 18, 2020

No pandemic can stop
CFC The Netherlands
from delivering help, especially
to affected OFWs from the country.

Jobless. Abroad. Alone and lonely. This was what life was like for many members of Couples for Christ (CFC) Netherlands during the first months of the COVID-19 crisis. The reality of people in need inspired CFC Country Heads Mel and  Daday

Struggling OFWs
and Filipino migrants received
help from the "Tulong Kapatid" program.

de Leon, together with ANCOP Heads Medel and Milen Aviles, to start the “Tulong Kapatid” program, which provided relief through door-to-door delivery of care packages as well as financial assistance to the most affected CFC members.

According to their assessment, Filipino cleaners were the most badly hit by the crisis as most employers refused their services for fear of contracting the virus. Placed under the umbrella of CFC ANCOP, the program later on extended to non-members to address urgent needs like rent money and basic day-to-day expenses.

Even though they started small, they were amazed at how God sustained their efforts week after week. They attracted more donors, both from the government and from NGOs, allowing them to reach up to 70 people.

‘Ingat Kapatid’

As the country eases its restrictions, CFC Netherlands focuses on rehabilitation and keeping its members safe as they go back to work. They move on to the next phase of “Tulong Kapatid,” “Ingat Kapatid,” which organizes webinars on COVID awareness and safety in the workplace.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic this year, millions of people have been affected by its economic impact. In the Philippines alone, DOLE recorded 5 million Filipinos losing their jobs and more than 55,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) deported back to the country.

Collective effort

Meanwhile, other countries like CFC Canada and CFC USA, as well as areas in Metro Manila and provinces in the Philippines, have been continuously supporting CFC ANCOP’s programs. Joining efforts with the CFC Family Ministries, CFC ANCOP’s COVID-19 efforts include:

  • Distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and facemasks to hospitals and prisons;
  • Providing  relief goods, and hygiene kits to ANCOP beneficiaries (scholars, Cornerstone tutees, and home partners);
  • Feeding and weekly distribution of relief and hygiene kits to street dwellers and poor families in Payatas during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila.

In these desperate times, there are still people who choose to be a “light” to others. Despite being affected by the crisis themselves, our CFC leaders all over the world are going the extra mile to reach out to those in need.
